The Charlotte Senior Center, built through the generous bequest of Walter Irish and opened in 2002, is the successful hub for senior (and not so senior) residents of our community. The Board of Directors of the Friends of the Charlotte Senior Center manages the Senior Center; Center staff includes the Director and the Center Coordinator.

Operating under the Charlotte town budget, the Senior Center provides a wide range of activities for the 400 to 500 participants who walk through the doors each week to take part in classes, visit with friends, exercise, play bridge and mahjong, hike, bird watch and kayak among a variety of other activities.

The Senior Center is open from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday with scheduled activities. Classes, programs and activities are detailed in a Monthly Newsletter distributed by mail and email. Sign up for the email on the Monthly Newsletter page. Every Friday The Week Ahead is emailed to subscribers. Classes change from time to time, and the Center staff and board encourage suggestions from the community for new offerings.

Meals at the Center are enjoyable events. Drop in for Monday Munch, served from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Monday menus usually include soup, salad and dessert (reservations not required).  Men’s Breakfast, cooked and served by the men, is at  7:00 am on the 2nd Friday of each month; registration required. Grab & Go meals are provided by Age Well on Thursdays. Sign up by calling the Senior Center at 802.425.6345. For all meals there is a suggested donation for of $5 ($6 for Men’s Breakfast).

A key component of the Senior Center’s continuing success is the hands-on involvement of many volunteers, without whose work the Center could not operate as it does. Hosts greet and direct participants, cooking crews dish up delicious weekly lunches as well as the special meals, dishwashers wash the dishes for these meals, treat makers prepare for Halloween, and others maintain our lovely garden areas, present special lectures and programs, and staff the plant sale, the summer barbecue, and Red Cross blood drives.

As a member of our community, the Center also works cooperatively with the Charlotte Library, Champlain Valley Union High School, Charlotte Central School, the Charlotte Children’s Center, the Charlotte Grange and other town groups, as well as serves as a Red Cross blood donation site.

We strongly encourage folks of any age to participate in the many activities offered here and to join our crew of volunteers. Stop by during the day to visit, read the newspaper, enjoy a cup of coffee, meet others and find out for yourselves what’s happening at your Senior Center.

The Center can be reserved for public meetings or rented for private gatherings at other times.
